Using gobos for wedding lighting to illuminate walkways, walls and ceilings with the happy couple's names has been a growing practice for a short time now, but a new way of using lighting design is becoming popular as well.
Disney recently highlighted this new technique in their Disney Fairy Tale Wedding's service with wedding cake light mapping. The system uses a white cake and custom gobo designs to put any image a couple wants on their cake.
Using gobo projectors, images are mapped to the cake. Disney used the traditional Tinkerbell introduction video for their sample, but any imagery, from the couple's own love story to quotes and other designs can be used.
"With wedding cake animation that scrolls over icing like a mini movie, Disney desserts can now be transformed with fully customizable image mapping projection technology," Korri Mcfann Spolar, Marketing Director for Disney Fairy Tale Weddings, wrote on the company blog. "Whether you want to showcase a photo slideshow, home video or your favorite quote fondant is refashioned into an enchanted animated canvas that is sure to impress. Your guests will be amazed as your cake quickly becomes reception entertainment- trust me, they've never seen a wedding cake projection quite like this!"
Disney isn't the only company to use this technology either. According to the Huffington Post, one couple created a video wedding cake using the same techniques, merging the couple's favorite games into a unique design projected onto their cake.
