From Projection 101 to EDM Master Classes, LDI 2014 will feature amazing learning opportunities for lighting designers and businesses looking to utilize gobo lights in a wide variety of purposes. The convention offers the tips and instruction from some of the leading innovative minds in lighting design and projection, learning the tricks of the trade from some of the best of the best. Held from November 17 – 23, this year's LDI will also feature demonstrations in electronic dance music performance, lighting and showmanship.
One of the best classes being held this year is a Projection 101 course with up-and-comer Matthew Ragan, a media maker and interactive system designer who worked on a wide variety of stage performances and is a member of Arizona State University's Ars Robotica Project.
"Projection 101 requires that we take some time to really peel apart the fundamentals of the topic of projection itself," Ragan told Live Design regarding the class. "Like many disciplines, video and projection design often seems like a discrete skill at first glance. It's only when we start to closely examine the field that we can discover the constellation of skills and topics that we need to understand in order to really get a handle on working with projection for live performance. From the mathematics of throw distance and human visual acuity, to the fundamental approaches to building and cueing content, we'll demystify the process from start to finish, and give participants opportunities to ask questions along the way."
Ragan takes projection to an art form, but beginners need to start with the right equipment. Get custom gobo designs and projectors from GoboSource to start working on your own lighting and projection ideas before attending LDI.
