The Grammy-nominated metalcore act Killswitch Engage played a beautifully-illuminated series of shows on the Monster’s Mosh tour, using gobo lights and images to bring lighting elements from horror films to the stage. According to Live Design, the show was helmed by lighting designer Darragh Guiney, and used a variety of spots and gobo projectors to impress the crowd.
“Josh Mihlek, production manager for Killswitch Engage, buried himself in his office for weeks going through old stock footage of hammer horror movies and other real old-style scary stuff,” Guiney told the news source. “We offset this with static Killswitch logos and lots of static and staggered fizzy effects. In-between songs there were drive-in movie type horror trailers with audio. The panels worked very well to display every image we fed them with the intensity we wanted.”
Blending dynamic lighting effects with fog and video allowed the team to create a horror-inspired light show to accompany Killswitch Engage’s powerful music, to the delight of both the band and the audience. According to Guiney, the effects were a great way to add a fun element to the show.
Gobos can be used to add unique elements to any live performance, but you need to ensure that you’re using the right designs. Stock metal gobos can be useful, but in order to truly impress a crowd you may want to consider using custom gobo designs. From band logos to special themes, custom gobo images can take any concert or performance to a new level of entertainment and impress even the most cynical crowd.
