The Stones close European tour with phenomenal light show

Ending the European branch of their "14 on Fire" tour with a bang, The Rolling Stones utilized more than 200 moving gobo lights in their most recent show. According to Live Design, gobos were used to throw unique designs across the stage and audience throughout the Stones' performance.

The concert – the headlining spot on this year's Roskilde festival in Denmark – was well received, with lighting design by Patrick Woodroffe.

Gobos provide many benefits at a rock show, from swift lighting changes to  projection of a band's logo. They fit well into nearly any budget, and can be used minimally or extensively, depending on the venue and scale of the performance. For the Roskilde festival, the Stones had 12 trusses running upstage and downstage to accommodate all of the lighting projectors. Woodroffe created 9 completely different designs for the 14 performances on the band's tour, which included arenas, stadiums and festivals, as well as the Stones' first performance in Israel.

The versatility and capacity of gobo lights to incorporate unique designs and colors into a show make them an essential component of any band's live act. These tools can be used to promote the band, dazzle audiences or simply provide subtle lighting cues to accentuate mood shifts in the performance. Mixing in custom gobos with other elements like lasers and LED spots, when coordinated with the music, can achieve a more cohesive look that helps reinforce the themes in the music, rather than overriding them.
