World’s largest EDM festival embraces gobos for lighting design

The 2014 Outlook Festival, held in Croatia, utilized gobo lights to optimize lighting for the multi-day music event. The largest dub step and bass music festival in the world, the event was held at the desolate Fort Punta Christo near Pula, Croatia. The unused fort provided a unique backdrop for the electronic dance music, which lighting designers worked into the theme.

Held on multiple stages, the festival brought over 400 acts and nearly 15,000 patrons to the island. As a 19th-century fort, there were several unique areas to build stages for performers, including one of the island's many sea-side coves, where the main stage was located. Additional stages were placed throughout the area, including in the fort and at key features of the building, including its moat, a garden area and several clearings around it.

Lighting all of these stages was a challenge for the designers from Fineline Lighting, with eight stages, a variety of architectural components and safety lighting to consider, according to Live Design.

Much of the festival utilized moving gobo lights, including a variety of color and images to enhance the musical performances.

"The basic brief in terms of 'lighting ambience' was to make it look and feel like a series of random parties happening across the fort – organized but with a raw, makeshift and exciting edge, also integrating as much of the Fort as possible, " Rob Sangwell, Fineline's managing director, told the news source.

Utilizing gobo images and lights for music festivals provides a wide variety of customization options with easy switching out of gobo designs, filters, colors and other accessories. This allows from swift changes to be made and less downtime between performances.
